Coronavirus in Scotland: Cases rise by over 1,000 as Nicola Sturgeon urges Scots to stay home

The number of coronavirus cases in Scotland has risen by over 1,000, according to Scottish Government figures.

The latest statistics confirm that 1,149 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the past 24 hours.

The positive tests represented 8.2% of the 15,411 newly tested for the virus.

No updates were reported on the number of deaths or hospitalisations as a result of the Christmas period, with the next update on these statistics due on Tuesday December 29.

The latest figures come after level 4 restrictions were imposed across mainland Scotland for three weeks in an attempt to curb the spread of the new variant of coronavirus.

Nicola Sturgeon today urged the Scottish public to stay home and in their local area as much as possible, to help limit the spread of the new strain of the virus.

She tweeted: "Level 4 restrictions are now in place across mainland Scotland. Please stay home/local as much as possible, to help stop this new, faster spreading strain of the virus running out of control".
