Coronavirus in Scotland: Cases rise by further 740 in past 24 hours

The number of coronavirus cases in Scotland has risen by 740 in the past 24 hours according to the latest Scottish Government figures.

The statistics mean that a total of 1,889 new cases have been reported in Scotland since Covid restrictions were relaxed on Christmas Day.

The positive tests reported today represented 12.3% of the 6,793 people across the country who were newly tested for the virus.

No updates were reported on the number of deaths or hospitalisations as a result of the Christmas period, with the next update on these statistics due on Tuesday December 29.

The latest figures come after medical leaders warned that the NHS in Scotland could be facing a "perfect storm of challenges" this winter - as the coronavirus pandemic means hospitals are already working at near capacity.

Members of the Scottish Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and Faculties have spoken out amid concerns that the health service may not be able to cope with a further surge in Covid-19 infections and could be "overwhelmed".

Glasgow and mainland Scotland was placed under Level 4 restrictions yesterday for three weeks in an attempt to curb the spread of the new variant of coronavirus.

Nicola Sturgeon has urged the Scottish public to stay home and in their local area as much as possible, to help limit the spread of the new strain of the virus.
