Coronavirus in Scotland: 558 new cases overnight in largest daily jump on record

In the last 24 hours, Scotland has reported a further 558 coronavirus cases across the country.

The 558 new cases represent 9.5 per cent of those who were tested on Thursday, taking the total number since the pandemic began to 26,518.

Today (September 25), Nicola Sturgeon warned that although the new numbers are impacted by university cluster outbreaks, that "no one should be under the impression that COVID-19 is just a uni problem".

Out of the new positive tests, 119 were in the Lothians, with 255 in Greater Glasgow and Clyde and 61 in Lanarkshire.

Last night, the Scottish Government imposed further restrictions on students across the country after a surge in cases on different campuses.

This weekend, students will not be allowed to attend bars or restaurants to try and curb the spread, and must remain in their accommodation as much as possible.

Edinburgh Napier University is one of many who now have a huge proportion of their students in self isolation after 125 cases were identified there.

Hospital admissions also saw a small rise on Friday, with 89 patients now being treated for the virus and 11 in an intensive care unit.

No new deaths have been recorded.
