Coronavirus in Scotland: 486 cases reported overnight in new daily record

Scotland has reported a total of 486 new coronavirus cases over the last 24 hours.

The new figures represent a total of 7.8 per cent of those tested for COVID-19 on Tuesday, as cases continue to rise throughout the country.

This is the highest daily figure ever to be recorded in Scotland, however the First Minister highlighted that there are more people being tested than at the beginning of lockdown.

Out of the new cases recorded, 57 are in the Lothians, with a further 224 in Greater Glasgow and Clyde and 107 in Lanarkshire.

However, the rise in Glasgow cases has been linked to a cluster outbreak at the University of Glasgow over the last few days.

On Tuesday, the First Minister introduced a range of new measures to try and stop the "drive in transmission" which will begin from today.

In an address to the Scottish Parliament, Nicola Sturgeon announced that indoor gatherings are to be banned in each others homes, a rule that is already in place in the West of Scotland.

Pubs, restaurants and bars will also now be forced to close at 10pm as social events are restricted further.

There has also been a reported rise in hospital admissions, with 83 patients being treated across Scotland including 10 in an intensive care unit.

The new figures have also shown two further deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours.
