Coronavirus in Scotland: 41 more deaths as 771 new cases recorded in last 24 hours

41 people have died of coronavirus in the last 24 hours in Scotland, the Scottish Government has confirmed.

A further 771 people have tested positive for the virus overnight bringing the total number of cases to 90,081.

The death toll for Scotland now stands at 3,544 since the start of the pandemic in March.

A total of 1,197 people are currently receiving hospital treatment of which 84 are in intensive care.

Figures were released by the Scottish Government this afternoon as it was reported that six vulnerable residents have died at a Scots care home.

Health chiefs confirmed the sad news the deadly cluster took hold at the Alma McFadyen Care Centre in Dalbeattie, Dumfries and Galloway.

Bosses say correct protocols for dealing with the virus were in place at the 24-bed home, with measures being implemented.

A spokesman for Dumfries and Galloway Health and Social Care Partnership said: “This is obviously a very upsetting and concerning situation, and thoughts are with families and residents at this time."

Today’s figures also came as some of the UK's top retailers revealed they are changing their opening hours to help lift the Christmas gloom.

Firms including M&S, Aldi, Waitrose and Primark are ringing in some seasonal changes to celebrate.

Scotland is living under strict lockdown guidelines until December 11 leading to the closure of all but non essential shops.

But with 11 local authority areas currently facing Tier Four restrictions, big businesses confirmed they are set to get back to normal across the country for the final few weeks of December.
