Coronavirus in Scotland: 39 deaths registered in past 24 hours as cases rise by 1,064

39 more people have died after testing positive for coronavirus in Scotland in the past 24 hours, bringing the country's death toll under this measurement to 4,109.

The Scottish Government's daily statistics also confirm that 1,064 new cases were registered since yesterday, making up 5.2 per cent of all tests, bringing the total number of positive cases since the outbreak began to 105,370.

This is the second day in a row that positive tests have surpassed 1,000 cases, following on from yesterday's figure of 1,001.

Of these, 296 were in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, 151 in Lanarkshire, 143 in Lothian and 89 in Ayrshire and Arran.

52 people were in intensive care yesterday with recently confirmed Covid-19 - one less than yesterday - with 994 people in hospital -five fewer than yesterday.

The latest figures come amid criticism from a Scottish public health expert that the easing of restrictions over Christmas was a "mistake" which will have "consequences".

Linda Bauld, professor of public health at the University of Edinburgh, said she was concerned about people travelling from areas with high infections to parts of the country with lower prevalence of the virus.
