Coronavirus in Scotland: 37 more deaths as 1,248 new cases recorded

37 people have died of coronavirus in the last 24 hours in Scotland, the Scottish Government has confirmed.

A further 1,248 people have tested positive for the virus overnight bringing the total number of cases to 83,259.

The death toll for Scotland now stands at 3,323 since the start of the pandemic in March.

A total of 1,249 people are currently receiving hospital treatment of which 95 are in intensive care.

The figures emerged as Nicola Sturgeon is due to update the Scottish parliament and the country on the changes to the current tier system.

It is expected large parts of the west of Scotland will move into the toughest restrictions at level 4.

According to a leaked document, the Glasgow council area, the three Ayrshire councils, Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire, West and East Dunbartonshire, North and South Lanarkshire and Stirling and possibly Inverclyde could be headed into the highest lockdown restrictions.

Sturgeon has stressed that it is the government's intention to keep schools open even under level 4 measures, despite teachers threatening strike action.

If confirmed as expected, the level 4 decision will lead to further restrictions on travel, closure of non essential shops, hairdressers, pubs and gyms from Friday.

Sturgeon has signalled tough new rules will see travel restrictions become legally enforceable, in an attempt to further suppress the virus.
