Coronavirus in Scotland: 296 admitted to hospital overnight as cases rise by 1,877

A further 296 people with recently confirmed Covid-19 have been admitted to hospital since yesterday.

The number of coronavirus patients being treated now stands at 1,598 with a further 123 people in intensive care - an increase of 18 in just 24 hours.

An additional 1,877 positive cases have been confirmed across the country with three more deaths registered.

Scotland's death toll now stands at 4,968.

Of the new cases, the majority were reported in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde healthboard with 531 positive tests. Lanarkshire recorded a further 278.

Nicola Sturgeon yesterday warned that there is "huge pressure" on the NHS as hospital admissions continue to rise.

Admissions have now surpassed the figures seen at the peak of the pandemic in April when no more than 1,520 people were in hospital at any one time.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and NHS Lanarkshire was last week operating at over 60% capacity.

The Scottish Government has confirmed that the NHS Louisa Jordan will be on standby to provide care for individuals who have tested positive for coronavirus but are in a stable condition and don't need critical care.
