Coronavirus in Scotland: 290 new cases as Nicola Sturgeon warns of tougher restrictions

In the last 24 hours, a total of 290 new coronavirus cases have been reported across Scotland.

The new figures represent a total of four per cent of those tested across the country on Wednesday.

Nicola Sturgeon confirmed the numbers in the Scottish Parliament on Thursday, at which she also confirmed 47 of the cases were recorded in the Lothians.

Today the First Minister stated that the government are looking into whether or not further restrictions are needed across the whole country as well as specific areas.

In the last 24 hours, the city has seen clusters reported in student accommodation at Edinburgh Napier University, as well as Preston Towers primary school.

16 police officers have also been told to self isolate at the Drylaw station after a positive case of COVID-19 was identified.

112 of the cases were in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, with another 52 in Lanarkshire.

The First Minister also reported a small rise in hospital admissions, with 52 patients currently being treated for the virus.

Out of that number, five are in intensive care units around the country.

No new deaths have been reported, with the total number of deaths remaining at 2501.
