Coronavirus in Scotland: 160 new cases as 18 confirmed in Edinburgh

160 new cases of coronavirus have been recorded across Scotland overnight.

The new figures were announced by Nicola Sturgeon with 18 of the cases in the NHS Lothian region.

The First Minister said the news was "undoubtedly a concern" as the new number marks one of the highest daily jumps in weeks.

As reported, the 160 new cases represent 0.9 per cent of those tested in Scotland on Sunday.

Monday's briefing also confirmed that 258 people are in hospital with the virus, with five patients being treated in an intensive care unit. There have been no further deaths.

Over the weekend the country saw the number of new cases soar, after nearly 200 were confirmed during Saturday and Sunday.

Out of Monday's new reported cases, 69 were found to be in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, with the First Minister confirming that the "patterns are being very carefully examined" surrounding the cluster.

Edinburgh and the Lothians were also mentioned by Nicola Sturgeon after 18 new cases were reported, one of the largest rises in daily cases for months.

Yesterday cases were discovered at sites across the city, as popular eatery Montpelliers was forced to close after a member of staff tested positive.

A supermarket worker at ASDA was also found to be carrying the virus.

The total number of cases in Scotland since the pandemic began now sits at 20,478.
