Coronavirus in Scotland: 159 new cases confirmed with 29 in the Lothians

Scotland has reported a daily rise of 159 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours.

Out of the newly recorded cases, 29 have been confirmed to be in the Lothian region, making it the second highest in Scotland.

NHS Lothian has not reported a daily rise of this size since May, with 63 cases reported in Glasgow and 19 in Lanarkshire.

Wednesday's figures have continued to see the number of new positive cases soar after 208 were reported on Sunday in just one day, the highest daily figure since May.

The 159 new cases represent 1.9 per cent of those tested on Tuesday.

This takes the total number of cases recorded to 21, 878 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The First Minister announced the latest news at the coronavirus daily briefing, at which she also announced no new deaths have been recorded.

As of today, there are 274 patients in hospital, with six currently being treated in an intensive care unit.

Nicola Sturgeon also stated that there has been a "trebling in daily cases" in recent weeks, with the percentage of those testing positive rising to above one per cent.
