Coronavirus in Scotland: 101 new cases reported as figures continue to soar

Scotland has reported a further 101 cases of coronavirus since yesterday.

These 101 new cases represent 1.1 per cent of those tested on Wednesday, taking the total number of cases to 20,889.

The latest daily figure has reported similar numbers to the rest of this week, with a surge of at least 100 cases reported every day.

Speaking at Thursday's daily briefing, Nicola Sturgeon that the government now believes the 'R' number or rate of transmission "is now probably over one, and could be as high as 1.4".

However, she also added that this rise is not as concerning when the "overall presence of the virus is low".

At present, the country is currently dealing with a large outbreak in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde region, with some lockdown features reimposed for the time being.

Those living in Glasgow are no longer allowed to have guests inside their home or vice versa, with anyone supposed to be travelling in or out of the area advised not to do so.

Today, Glasgow was reported to have 33 new cases, with figures for the Lothians to be updated later this afternoon.

The First Minister also confirmed that 259 people are currently being treated for the virus in hospital, with four in an intensive care unit.

Thursday also saw one new deaths reported after one was also confirmed on Wednesday, taking the total death toll to 2496.
