Coronavirus in Scotland: 1,249 die from virus as confirmed cases hit 10,324

A total of 1249 people have now died of coronavirus in hospital in Scotland, an increase of 18 deaths from Saturday.

The number of positive confirmed cases of Covid-19 have risen to 10,324, which is a rise of 273.

Latest figures also show that 133 Scots who currently have confirmed or suspected coronavirus are in intensive care units and confirmed or suspected cases in hospitals are now at 1,735.

The latest statistics were announced by the Scottish Government today.

A press briefing will be held later today.

Health Secretary Jeane Freeman, Chief Nursing Officer Professor Fiona McQueen and National Clinical Director Jason Leitch should all be in attendance at the meeting.

It comes as our sister paper the Sunday Mail today revealed First Minister Nicola Sturgeon missed six Cobra meetings between January and March to discuss Covid-19.

In response to the story, the Scottish Government said: “The First Minister has been chairing meetings of the Scottish Government Resilience Committee, our equivalent of Cobra, since January 29.

“The Scottish Government has been represented at all Cobra ministerial meetings on coronavirus that we have been invited to. We often receive only limited advance notice of such meetings.”

Writing exclusively for the Record on Friday, Sturgeon said: “The pandemic is a health crisis, a social crisis and an economic crisis that is causing harm across the world on an unprecedented scale.

"The impact of coronavirus on Scotland has been no less profound.

"No individual, community or business has been untouched and for many of you, that has meant real hardship.

"But the response from the Scottish people has been equally profound.”
