Coronavirus in Ireland: No person dies from Covid-19 in Republic for third day in a row

The coronavirus has claimed no further lives in the Republic of Ireland for a third day in a row.

However, 36 new confirmed cases have been announced by the Department of Health.

This rise in infections - the highest since June 13 - has brought the total number of cases here to 25,802.

The death toll in the Republic remains at 1,753.

Dr Ronan Glynn, Acting Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said: “Together, we have achieved so much in our ongoing effort to limit the spread of COVID-19 in our communities, making it possible to take steps to reopen society and the economy.

“Today I am asking everyone to stay the course on the public health measures needed to suppress COVID-19, such as covering coughs, hand washing, use of face coverings and 2m social distancing, which are essential for continuing the momentum towards the reopening of our schools and the resumption of our healthcare services.”

Over the past week, 51,128 tests were carried out - 139 of which were positive.

Earlier on Tuesday, health officials in Northern Ireland reported no new deaths linked to Covid-19.

The death toll there remains at 556, while two new cases has brought the total number of infections in the North to 5,859.
