CHICAGO _ The Illinois Department of Public Health on Sunday reported 2,727 newly confirmed cases of coronavirus, as well as 9 more confirmed fatalities.

The total number of known infections now stands at 319,150 and the death toll at 8,984 statewide since the pandemic began. Officials also reported 64,047 new tests in the previous 24 hours.

Meanwhile, after more than a month under tighter restrictions aimed at slowing the spread of COVID-19, the Metro East region has been allowed to return to phase four rules that allow indoor dining and bar service and gatherings of up to 50 people, state officials said Friday.

The region outside St. Louis was the first in Illinois to see a scaled back reopening in August after it passed a state-set threshold of an 8% positivity rate for three consecutive days.

Additionally, Lake County has been added to the list of counties under warning for a potential resurgence of the coronavirus, state health officials said Friday. The weekly list from the IDPH includes 26 counties, down from 28 a week earlier.
