Coronavirus in Edinburgh: What do the new English lockdown restrictions mean for Scotland

Following a surge of coronavirus infections, that have sparked fears of a potential second wave, Boris Johnson has tightened lockdown restrictions in England once again.

In England, people will no longer be able to socialise in groups of more than six people from 14 September following the sudden spike in cases.

The new rules will ban gatherings by law, but will not affect schools, workplaces or Covid-secure weddings, funerals and organised team sports.

If people fail to comply with the legislation they could be given a £100 penalty with fines inforced up to £3,200 for multiple offenses.

So what do the new rules mean for Scotland?

The UK government is in no rush to lift the new rules although they do hope they can 'turn the situation around before Christmas.'

This means Scots with English relatives or friends, won't be able to join them in a gathering of more than six south of the border for the 'foreseeable future'

Previously the lawful limit on gathering in England was 30, meaning Scots would be able to join family for a staycation as long as they didn't mix with more than two households.

But now even when meeting up outside or in pubs and restaurants, Scots will not be allowed to mix with more than six people while in England.

In Scotland, the rules are now very different from England, with groups of up to eight people still allowed to meet indoors.

Groups of up to 15 people from up to four households are still also permitted to meet outdoors with social distancing in place.

However, with cases also continuing to surge in Scotland, the decision made by the UK government could influence Nicola Sturgeon to do something similar.

England and Scotland have taken a similar approach to many COVID measures. often introducing identical travel quarantines just days apart.

Yesterday, Scotland's National Clinical Director Professor Jason Leitch warned Scotland was on the 'edge' when it came to containing the virus with current measures and that the Scottish Government is 'worried.'
