Coronavirus in Edinburgh: Nine elderly residents die at care home

Nine residents at a care home in Edinburgh have died after contracting Covid-19.

The council-run care home, Jewel House in Bingham, is the latest care home to be hit during the coronavirus pandemic.

The deaths, first reported in The Sun, were described as a "national scandal" by Labour MP Ian Murray.

A spokesman for Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership told the newspaper: “Our thoughts are with the families of the deceased. We know this is an anxious time for everyone.

“Our priority is always the safety of residents and staff in homes.”

Edinburgh South MP Ian Murray said: “Behind every single figure is a family in mourning.

“SNP ministers need to urgently address delays in PPE delivery and testing of staff and residents to prevent further loss of life.”

Age Scotland’s Brian Sloan said: “It is so important that older people are given every opportunity to get the medical treatment they need to beat this virus and are not written off.”

Last week it was reported13 residents at another Edinburgh care home died from suspected coronavirus.

Four Seasons Healthcare said there have been a number of deaths at Guthrie House care home in Liberton.

A spokeswoman for the care home operator said there had been a number of deaths of residents who were displaying symptoms associated with coronavirus.

Official figures show 495 homes have reported at least one case of suspected Covid-19.
