Coronavirus in Bristol: Heatmap shows spike of more than 2,000 active cases in the area

Heatmaps tracking active cases of coronavirus across the UK have indicated a sharp spike in cases around Bristol.

The maps, which have been assembled by the Covid Symptom Study, an app which tracks people with coronavirus symptoms across the country, suggest that 288,579 Brits are currently infected by the virus, as of 5am yesterday morning (Thursday October 8).

The data assembled is indicating that there are now more than 2,000 active cases of the virus across the three regions of Bristol, with more than 1,200 in the City of Bristol area alone.

The City of Bristol region is now estimated to have 1,223 active cases of the virus, an increase of 269 since the previous figures on Tuesday (October 6).

The rate of active cases per million people in the area has also jumped significantly, now standing at 2,659 cases per million people.

The rate per million people in both South Gloucestershire and North Somerset have also now risen above 2,000 for the first time.

The number of estimated active cases in Bristol and its surrounding areas, with the rate of active cases per million people in brackets, is as follows:

  • City of Bristol - 1,232 (2,659 per 1,000,000)
  • South Gloucestershire - 570 (2,018 per 1,000,000)
  • North Somerset - 436 (2,038 per 1,000,000)

These figures take into account estimated cases involving patients that have not been tested for COVID-19, which is why in some cases, they differ from the actual confirmed number of cases by Public Health England.
