Coronavirus: Iconic photo shows Dublin couple married 71 years separated by nursing home glass as husband blows kisses at 'movie star' wife

This is an iconic but heartbreaking photo snapped at a nursing home in the capital this week.

A Dublin couple married 71 years this year blew kisses and waved at each other through the window of a nursing home in a snap that shows coronavirus is continuing to tear couples apart throughout Ireland.

Danny Kennedy adores his "movie star" wife Phyllis but has been unable to make his usual, normal visits to Howth Hill Lodge nursing home because of COVID-19.

While visiting his wife on Wednesday morning, Danny spoke to Lara O’Brien and photographer Annraoi Blaney of Facebook page The Heart of Howth.

Speaking to Dublin Live, Lara described how the "perfect moment" was captured at the nursing home.

"Danny is only 10 days younger than Phyllis and shared that Phyllis had a stroke six years ago.

"They have been married 71 years this year."

Lara said that Danny fixed his hat and continued to keep his eye on the door waiting for his beloved to arrive.

She added: "Normally, he visits Phyllis at dinnertime and stays with her in the home until 10pm. Now he arrives at 12:30pm everyday and waits at the window.

"He chatted to us while he waited. He lives alone and his daughter brings his weekly shop.

"He misses his wife and his face lights up when Phyllis arrives to the window."

Lara added that when his wife finally arrived, they shared a big wave and blew each other kisses before he paid her the ultimate compliment.

She added: "He pointed to Annroai Og (our young photographer) and said 'look, you’re a movie star' and she had a big smile for the camera then.

"It just shows the true love in Howth in the time of a pandemic."
