Coronavirus: How to make flat bread with simple ingredients if your shop has run out

Supermarket websites crashed last night as Boris Johnson urged Brits to use food delivery services when possible as he announced the most stringent lockdown measures yet.

Stores including Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's were among those which struggled to cope with the traffic heading to the websites, with many customers who did manage to get through reporting there were no delivery slots available.

Stocks in shops themselves continue to run low in many places, with basics including pasta, tinned food and toilet roll hard to find.

With the bare necessities high in demand, a chef took to social media to share his recipe to make flat bread using just five ingredients - and you can do it all on your hob.

Brandon Johnson, a chef and baker at The Brass Kettle in South Dakota, shared the method on Facebook in the hope it will help others.

He wrote: "Bread shortage? This is the easiest kind of bread you can make. Costs pennies and can get you through these strange times, my family lived off these when the pickings were slim."

You'll need two cups of flour, one cup of lukewarm water (or slightly more), one tablespoon of baking powder, one teaspoon of kosher salt, and one table spoon of oil or butter.

Brandon instructed to combine the dry ingredients together before adding most of the water and mixing until it has the consistency of tacky pizza dough. You can add more water if required.

Knead it for a few minutes before leaving it to rest in a greased bowl for half an hour to an hour.

After that, divide it into six pieces and roll out the mixture on a floured surface until it is quite thin - the same thickness as a tortilla.

Heat a griddle and cook the dough until golden brown spots appear and flip until it is cooked on both sides.

As one asked if the recipe would work in a pan on the hob, another replied to say they had done it with great success on a medium heat, rubbing the pan with a small amount of oil to ensure it didn't stick.

One said: "I made these yesterday. I just ended up cooking them on medium/low heat pan and it turned out great, didn't stick or anything, I did coat my hands in flour before forming them though. Super easy and so good!"

Brandon added the flat breads can be made ahead of time and covered, or frozen for later use.

The post attracted more than 191,000 shares and 12,000 comments as others thanked him for sharing the simple hack.
