In Bristol and South Gloucestershire, two more people in each area have died within 28 days of testing positive for the virus.

North Somerset also recorded another covid-related fatality.

It comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson addressed the nation this evening following the spread of the new Omicron variant of concern.

Although he said people should not cancel Christmas plans, he added that the current restrictions will be kept "under constant review" as scientists learn more about the variant.

The full breakdown of case numbers is below, including the total number accumulated during the pandemic alongside the daily rise in brackets:

  • North Somerset - 28,833 (+107)
  • Bristol - 76,703 (+246)
  • Bath and North East Somerset: 28,131 (+107)
  • South Gloucestershire - 43,470 (+242)

Nationally another 39,716 covid cases were reported today, bringing the overall total since the pandemic began to 10,228,772.

Another 159 people have died in the UK within 28 days of a positive test, meaning the death toll is now at 144,969 only including those who had a positive test confirmed.
