Coronavirus hotspot as Falkirk records highest number of cases in Scotland

Falkirk has the highest coronavirus infection rate in Scotland.

Data shows there are currently 223.1 cases per 100,000 people, that’s compare to 53.9 cases in the Highlands and 27.1 cases per 100,000 in Aberdeen.

Health bosses think the figure is so high because of outbreaks at local workplaces.

And with more testing being carried out, more positive cases of the virus are starting to be picked up.

Just two months ago, in December, the district had the lowest level of coronavirus cases in the Forth Valley, allowing it to drop from Level 3 to Level 2 restrictions.

It meant that restaurants and pubs were allowed to welcome punters and serve alcohol indoors until 8pm.

While just a few miles away in Stirling, where infections had rocketed, people there remained in Level 3.

Hospital admission at Forth Valley Royal soared after Christmas, with staff blaming the relaxed rules on household mixing over the festive period.

However, the number of people needing to be admitted is now starting to stabilise.

Dr Graham Foster, Director of Public Health, NHS Forth Valley, said: “It has been a challenging couple of months with high levels of Covid-19 across the Forth Valley area.

Together with all our local partners we keep working hard to identify cases and reduce transmission. We are now seeing some early signs of local rates starting to stabilise or reduce and the number of patients in our hospitals with Covid-19 is also starting to come down.

“However, we are continuing to see high levels of transmission in our local communities and as the new strain of the virus is far more easily spread, it is vital that people remain vigilant and take extra care to protect themselves at this time.

"Please try to stay two metres apart, do not share cars with anyone from outside your household and follow FACTs at home and at work."
