Coronavirus: Hospital shuts surgical unit after night shift worker tests positive

University Hospital Southampton has closed its surgical high dependency unit to new admissions after a staff member tested positive for coronavirus.

Patients and staff who came into close contact with the healthcare professional have been informed and "appropriately isolated", according to the hospital's NHS trust.

The staff member worked a night shift on a surgical high dependency unit on Friday and is now isolated at home.

Any patients and staff who "came into close contact" with the person have also been isolated.

A spokesman said: "The surgical high dependency unit is temporarily closed to new admissions.

"Any patient affected by the temporary closure will be contacted directly.

"The Trust is following Public Health England and NHS guidance in respect of the virus and all other services are operating normally. Patients and staff should continue to attend appointments normally and come into work unless advised not to."

Coronavirus claimed its third victim in Britain last night as health authorities battle to control the spread of the deadly virus.

The latest casualty was a man in his 60s who had recently returned from Italy.

It was announced today that two new cases of coronavirus have been diagnosed in Wales, bringing the overall total to six.

Public Health Wales confirmed one patient is a resident in the Neath Port Talbot and has recently returned from southern Italy.

The second patient is resident in the Newport local authority area and has recently returned from northern Italy.

This takes the total number of people diagnosed with coronavirus in the UK to 280.

Dr Atherton said: "Both individuals are being managed in clinically appropriate settings.

"All appropriate measures to provide care for the individuals and to reduce the risk of transmission to others are being taken.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to assure the public that Wales and the whole of the UK is prepared for these types of incidents.

"Working with our partners in Wales and the UK, we have implemented our planned response, with robust infection control measures in place to protect the health of the public."
