Coronavirus: Holly and Phillip explain why This Morning is still on air despite lockdown

Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield have explained why This Morning is still on air despite the UK's lockdown.

Britain was ordered into an unprecedented lockdown on Monday night amid the coronavirus outbreak - but This Morning remains on our screens.

At the top of today's show, Holly said: "Lets start by explaining, probably actually for the first time ever, why we are here today."

Phillip revealed the government has classed the show as an "essential service" because of the important content they provide to viewers.

He said: "The government has classed us as an essential service for the time being to bring you the latest news on the virus.

"To answer your concerns with our doctors, to offer useful advice and to hopefully lighten the load as only This Morning knows how."

Holly explained they were running with a skeleton staff from now on with lots of people working from home and regular behind-the-scenes services cut back to an "absolute minimum".

The caring presenter called on viewers to ask questions at this worrying time so they could put their minds at rest.

Holly continued: "We’ve got a plan of what we’re doing today, but honestly that plan can go out of the window. If there’s anything that you’re watching, or you’ve seen something, or you’ve got any concerns, please get in touch.

"We’ve got experts, if they’re not in here we can contact them. We can put your questions to them and find out.

"We’re here for you so use us in the best possible way."

Phil concluded: “We’re a pretty flexible show at the best of times, but we’ve never been more flexible than we are now.”

While Dr Zoe was back in the studio for the first time since self-isolating at home after getting coronavirus.

She revealed: "I’m on day 10 and I was back to work yesterday in the practise, although most of the consultations were over the telephone and I’m feeling almost back to normal.

"Just still wouldn’t go for a run, wouldn’t exercise because I’m still not completely back to full strength, but no more infective symptoms at all."

Dr Zoe had been forced to self-isolate after exhibiting coronavirus symptoms last week (ITV)

Zoe continued: “Working in my clinic yesterday, everything is different. I can’t send patients for routine blood tests, I can’t send patients for routine x-rays, I can’t refer a patient. I saw a patient that had a hernia, I can’t do a routine referral for that patient to have their surgery."

On her recovery, Dr. Zoe admitted: "I think it’s a slow recovery and certainly from my own experience… having self-isolated for seven days, I needed that time to recover.

"So even though my fever and my cough subsided after two days, actually I was sleeping for 12 hours a night still. I was achy and just exhausted."

*This Morning airs weekdays on ITV at 10am
