Coronavirus hits City Academy Bristol as 17 cases confirmed and 126 pupils self-isolate

More than one hundred pupils at a Bristol secondary school are self-isolating.

City Academy Bristol has confirmed 17 coronavirus cases among students, which are "spread across all [year] groups".

The 874-pupil academy in Redfield currently has 126 students isolating as a result of the confirmed cases within the school.

There are also other students isolating as a result of contact with positive cases outside of school.

Cases and isolation have also had an impact on staffing and, as a result, the entire Year 9 cohort are learning from home this week.

In a letter sent to parents yesterday (Sunday, July 4), the school's principal Jon Angell said more than 15 staff members will be absent this week.

Mr Angell said he took the decision that Year 9 students should not attend the academy during that time, as more than half of the year group's lessons would have needed to be covered by supply teachers.

A spokesperson for City Academy said: “City Academy Bristol has, like many schools, seen a rise in cases of Covid-19 in recent weeks as community transmission has gone up.

"Overall there are 17 cases in the student body, spread across all groups, and there are currently 126 students isolating as a result of these confirmed cases.

"There are also students isolating as a result of contact with positive cases outside of school."

According to the latest data from Bristol City Council, coronavirus cases were confirmed in 95 schools across Bristol as of Wednesday (June 30) - compared to 68 a week earlier, a rise of 39.7 per cent, and 25 schools on June 9.

The school's spokesperson continued: "Cases and isolation have had some impact upon the staffing body too, including where staff have children of their own whose bubbles have closed.

"As a result the Academy is currently closed to Year 9, who are engaging in online learning for the rest of the week, so that safe levels of staffing can be maintained in the Academy for the remaining year groups.

"The Academy continues to focus on following the government guidance in relation to managing Covid in schools, and is working with staff, students and parents to ensure that where infection occurs, cases are isolated to break the chain of transmission.

"Parents have been extremely supportive in this regard.”

Several other educational settings in Bristol have confirmed cases of COVID-19 in recent days.

These include Fishponds Church of England Academy, which temporarily fully closed, and Air Balloon Hill Primary School, which recorded one case.

Others include Merchants' Academy, where children in year 7 learnt from home after a number of cases.

Cotham School also sent a year group home after a student tested positive for coronavirus.
