Coronavirus heat map says active cases rising sharply in some areas around Bristol

Bristol and surrounding areas have seen a rise of 20 estimated active coronavirus cases in less than a week.

The COVID Symptom Study is an app which tracks people with symptoms across the country and gives an estimate for the number of patients with the virus on a given day.

The data, from King's College London, says Bristol has 709 symptomatic cases per million people as of July 20.

Adjusted for population, that would mean the city has 329 cases in total - up by five since July 15.

Two surrounding areas have seen much sharper increases in the same period, according to the statistics.

North Somerset is believed to have 117 cases (545 per million) - a rise of 25 since July 15.

And Bath & North East Somerset (B&NES) is estimated to have 120 cases (627 per million) - up by 23.

The only area near Bristol which has seen a drop is South Gloucestershire, with 419 cases per million.

That would mean just 118 cases in the area, down by 33 in five days.

Overall, then, the Bristol region has seen a rise of 20 estimated active cases in that period.

Coronavirus - the latest news headlines on July 21

NHS England's official figure for cases in Bristol is 1,302 today (July 21), after an increase of two since yesterday.

It comes after Bristol saw rises in its R number and growth rate last week, with Bristol City Council saying people in the area must "act now" to prevent local lockdown.

The research says 27,913 people in the UK have symptomatic Covid-19.

Around 3.7 million people across the UK are using the app to report on their health, while the study also uses data from swab tests.
