Coronavirus: Heartbreaking pictures show mums separated by glass on Mother's Day

Heartbreaking pictures show elderly mums having to see their families through glass as they self-isolate on Mother's Day.

With authorities warning people to stay away from vulnerable relatives in an effort to prevent the spread of coronavirus, many have been forced to spend the day alone.

Some have had to pass on good wishes from a distance, while others have stayed away altogether.

For many it is the first time they have spent Mother's Day apart from their mums.

Dozens have posted pictures of themselves visiting parents and grandparents, unable to go indoors as their loved ones self-isolate.

One daughter wrote on Twitter : "Bit of a different mothers day this year..through glass."

Another posted: "Wishing one of the bravest mums a very happy mothers day. Keeping her behind glass - apart from being my mum she has cared for a million others - a midwife then health visitor for the NHS all her life, she fought TB, cancers, surgeries, chemo and radiotherapy."

Another woman described how difficult but necessary it was to keep vulnerable people safe, writing: "Celebrated Mother’s Day this evening, through the window, with my mummy.

"Respecting the need to keep our vulnerable and older generation safe. Hardest thing in the world not being able to give your mummy and daddy a hug. But.....we CAN do this! They ARE worth it!"

And one picture shared on Twitter shows a smiling 96-year-old woman pictured though glass.

Her granddaughter wrote: "Just been to see my 96 yr old gran Molly at her care home, was allowed to wave to her through the window and leave her Mother’s Day present.

"Bless her, broke my heart she’s no idea why we can’t go in. So much love for the amazing staff who are doing everything to keep them safe."

It's not just elderly relatives being kept in isolation, however.

A Scottish mum is devastated at the thought of spending Mother's Day away from her children for the first time in 14 years.

Christine McKinnon, from Blantyre, South Lanarkshire, was forced to make the heartbreaking decision to split her children in a bid to save her nine-year-old daughter's life.

One of her children, Kayla O'Hara, has a daily battle with Marfan syndrome - a disorder of the body's connective tissue, which affects her heart.

A common  cold  can floor the schoolgirl for two weeks, while the flu could cause much worse damage.

Terrified that coronavirus could kill her daughter, Christine said she had to make 'the right decision', the Daily Record reports.

She told the Record: "This will be the first  Mother's Day  I spend without all of my children together.

"But it's for the sake of Kayla, her life is at risk and I can't take the chance.

"I'm so scared of what could happen to her."

The NHS could be "overwhelmed" by coronavirus like Italy has been in just two weeks, Boris Johnson warned this morning.

Boris Johnson says he hopes to see his mum on Mother's Day despite telling people to social distance

The Prime Minister called on Brits to prevent the healthcare system being overwhelmed by the crisis.

Mr Johnson said: "Unless we act together, unless we make the heroic and collective national effort to slow the spread - then it is all too likely that our own NHS will be similarly overwhelmed.

"The Italians have a superb health-care system.

"And yet their doctors and nurses have been completely overwhelmed by the demand."

The Prime Minister advised people to keep away from elderly parents on Mother's Day today, saying: "The single best present that we can give ... is to spare them the risk of catching a very dangerous disease."
