Hair salons must also close across the country to help prevent the spread of coronavirus, an MP today warned.

David Morris, a Conservative MP who represents Morecambe and Lunesdale in Lancashire, believes the businesses are susceptible to the spread of the infection which has killed more than 230 Brits.

Bars, clubs, restaurants and leisure facilities have already been ordered to shut for the foreseeable future by the government but Mr Morris wants hair salons, beauty salons and nail bars to be added to that list.

The 54-year-old politician, who owned six hair salons and was a former stylist himself, told The Sun: “Hairdressers don’t wear gloves when cutting hair.

"It’s impossible to do so. They touch other people on average 1,000 times per haircut.

"They are within the individuals’ personal space."

“I don’t want to see my former colleagues close down but I don’t want them sick or spreading the virus either."

“Hairdressers work with so many clients every week that the issue needs to be addressed now."

Spain, Italy and other European countries have already gone into full lockdown due to the flu-like virus.

While Boris Johnson described their approach as going against “the freedom-loving instincts” of British people, he has hinted the UK may follow suit.

More than 5,000 people have been diagnosed with coronavirus in the country. As a result, Brits were told not to visit their mums on Mother’s Day and instead continue to social distance.
