Coronavirus: Government sets out how often you should be shopping - and it's probably less than you think

After lockdown measures were announced, it has taken some time for people to adjust to the new rules - but how often should we really be heading out to the shops?

Over a week ago, non-essential shops were closed while gatherings and social events were banned, with police granted powers to enforce these new rules.

But what about when it comes to shopping: how often should we really be heading out to grab some groceries?

Well, the days of nipping to the shops because you forgot something should be over - and not just because you may be faced with long queues outside supermarkets.

While Prime Minister Boris Johnson did not say how many times a day people could go to the supermarket, he said people should be shopping "as little as you can". Likewise, the official Government advice is "as infrequent as possible".

However, a Cabinet minister has revealed that people should only leave their homes to go shopping once a week as part of the restrictions designed to fight the spread of Covid-19.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps suggested Britons should only buy the essentials in their once-weekly trip to the supermarket, reports the Mirror.

When announcing the lockdown measures, Mr Johnson also said shoppers should be using food delivery services "where you can".

Speaking to the BBC, Mr Shapps said there had been "teething problems" but that people should stick to the rules.

He said: “People know the rules that have been set, try and shop just once a week.

“Just do the essentials, not everything else"

“The simple thing is, if at all possible, please take exercise close to your home.

“I’ve got dogs and, rather than put them in the car and drive somewhere with them, it’s about stepping out of the house and walking them around the block, or whatever it requires", he added.

Police squads in Edinburgh were patrolling Silverknowes and Cramond promenade in a bid to crackdown on rule-breakers who had driven to the beach over the weekend.

Meanwhile, supermarket chains have also introduced a range of measures and rules to fight the spread of coronavirus, including queuing systems outside stores and the installation of safety screens for staff.
