Coronavirus good news: Just 15 people in Irish hospitals with confirmed cases of Covid-19

Just 15 people are being treated for confirmed cases of Covid-19 at Irish hospitals.

As of 7.30pm on Friday, there are just five patients in Intensive Care Units, while there are 10 other patients elsewhere in hospitals as of 8am this morning.

The positive news comes amid growing concern about a second wave of the deadly bug, after the World Health Organisation reported 284,196 new cases globally, the most recorded in a single day.

But Ireland continues to perform well compared to other countries, recording zero deaths and 20 new cases on Friday.

These latest figures mean the death toll here remains at 1,763.

There have now been a total of 25,845 confirmed cases of the virus in Ireland.

Dr Ronan Glynn, Acting Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said: “COVID-19 is a highly infectious disease that is still circulating in our communities.

"It is a dangerous illness that no-one wants to catch.

“While we have reason to be positive, we now need to continue to work together towards our collective goal of resuming healthcare services, reopening our children’s schools, and protecting the most vulnerable.

“The past weeks have shown that when we maintain physical distance, wash our hands, wear a face cover where appropriate and cover our coughs and sneezes, together we can interrupt the spread of COVID-19. Let’s keep going.”

The rise in cases is the second highest daily number reported this week, while just two new deaths were announced since Sunday.

Nine fatalities were reported on Thursday but eight of these occurred in April, May and June.

Earlier on Friday, Northern Ireland reported no further Covid-19 related death for the 11th day in a row.

However, health officials in the North did report a rise of 15 new infections.

The death toll there remains at 556, while the total number of cases has now risen to 5,891.
