Coronavirus good news: Huge Irish milestone, vaccine update and Minister sees encouraging sign

As Ireland nears phase four of the reopening, people are being urged to exercise caution and keep practicing the health guidelines.

A jump in cases on Thursday has led to worry amongst experts that a second surge is just a matter of weeks away.

However, there is still plenty of encouraging signs as the world looks to get back to a "new normal".

Here's some of the reasons to be optimistic in the battle against Covid-19.

Northern Ireland seven days without a death

Northern Ireland has now gone seven days without a single death from the coronavirus.

The Department of Health announced today that the figure remains at 554 although four new cases were recorded.

It is also the 14th day in a row that there has been no coronavirus patients in hospital intensive care units.

Coronavirus vaccine

15 vaccines are currently in trial in humans with over 170 candidates now in development.

Hope amongst scientists and health experts is that a vaccine will be found in the not to distant future.

However, there is also the risk that an effective vaccine will never be found.

Positive sign

Face mask rules compliance on public transport appears to improving in recent days.

Minister Paschal Donohoe this morning commented on seeing a much higher percentage of people with face coverings on his Luas journey.

Mr Donohoe said: "I’m on the  Luas on way to work. Big increase in number of passengers wearing face masks. But still not everyone. Please do, we need to stay safe. Ronan Glynn making the risks clear re travel and safety."
