Coronavirus good news: Dublin granny tells of how she stays in high spirits amid Covid-19 lockdown

A granny who celebrated her 100th birthday has told how she’s keeping her spirits up in lockdown.

Margaret Lynch, from Dublin, had a heartwarming chat with Joe Duffy on RTE Radio 1 from her home.

She said: “Last week I put down a few plants and planted a few spuds in my garden.

“I’m hoping they’ll come up anyways, they’ll be up about July.

“I did hear someone saying that potatoes could be scarce later this year so I got ahead of them and put in a few seed potatoes.

“I’ve a very good family, I’ve had food left on the porch every day.

“Food cooked and put in freezer containers and I’ve had a lovely meal delivered from my local day centre where I’m still a volunteer.”

Margaret volunteers two days a week at the centre and is longest serving volunteer in the country with an impressive 54 years with the Sisters of Charity.

She added: “I serve out dinners and help clear tables, I’ve plenty of friends up there.”

And other listeners called in to wish Margaret a happy birthday.

Michael, who is Margaret’s neighbour, said: “Joe, this woman would astound you.

“Happy birthday, Margaret, I hope you’re keeping well.

“We’re neighbours about 61 years now.”

Another caller, Mary Kennedy, added: “A very happy 100th birthday to you, Margaret.”
