Coronavirus: Gary Lineker in self isolation as son George displays symptoms

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker has announced he is self isolating after his son George displayed unusual symptoms which could be related to coronavirus.

Lineker tweeted on Monday morning to say: "In self isolation as @GeorgeLineker has symptoms. They’re not the regular ones, but complete loss of sense of taste and smell. Odd these have not been pointed out much. Been nearly a week and has spent time at mine. I’ve been vigilant, hand washing/distancing but isolation it is."

He later added: "Worth being careful if you lose your sense of taste and smell. You could unknowingly have the virus. I checked all this with a doctor before sharing the information. Stay safe.

George, 28, works as an app designer and is known to have a close relationship with his father Gary.

Lineker has been vocal on social media about the need for a total lockdown of the country, with many people ignoring government advice to stay at home when possible.

He tweeted on Sunday to say: "Can't help feeling we should have been officially locked down by now. So many ignoring/misunderstanding government advice. We're sleepwalking into a nightmare."

When another Twitter user replied with their experience of seeing people going to cafes, he added: "Exactly why we need an official lockdown. It's already too late for many. Folk ain't listening."

In the absence of the Premier League Lineker and his co-pundits have been presenting a Match of the Day podcast, and they also returned to screens on Saturday night to discuss their top 10 Premier League captains of all time.

Lineker has been hosting Match of the Day as the main presenter since 1999, and also had a hugely successful playing career in which he won 80 caps for England as well as representing the likes of Everton, Barcelona and Tottenham.

The UK death toll from coronavirus has reached 281, according to the latest figures, while there are now 5,683 cases in total.
