Coronavirus: Gardai and Defence Forces deliver first shipments of PPE to Irish hospitals

A convoy of Defence Forces trucks flanked by Gardai set out to deliver vital personal protective equipment (PPE) to Irish hospitals on Monday.

The first shipments of PPE arrived on an Aer Lingus flight from China on Sunday.

As many as 60 trips to and from China are taking place over the next few weeks to bring items such as gowns, gloves and masks back to Ireland.

Aer Lingus pilots set off on the first flight on Saturday, arriving back on Sunday afternoon just after 3pm with the first batch of equipment.

A video shared by An Garda Siochana shows the trucks powering down the motorway after picking up the delivery at Dublin Airport.

Five trucks are seen in the convoy with a garda jeep and motorcycle outrider leading the transport.

They said: "@GardaTraffic and @defenceforces assisting the first of many deliveries of PPE for our frontline @HSELive @AmbulanceNAS colleagues.

"Here to support you on the frontline of this fight. RESPECT."

Yesterday, one of the flights bound for China was forced to turn back to Dublin Airport after a bird strike.

Flight EI9018 was just out on the Irish Sea when it is believed to have struck a bird and was forced to do a u-turn.

The plane departed at midday but was back in Dublin Airport by 12:30pm.

Two other flights also took off for China yesterday, with more scheduled for this week.
