Coronavirus full list of key workers and vulnerable children as UK schools to close

Schools, nurseries and colleges across the UK are to close to all pupils except those of key workers or vulnerable children in a bid to halt the spread of Covid-19, Boris Johnson has said.

Education secretary Gavin Williamson told MPs that schools in England would close their gates to all pupils except those of key workers on Friday until further notice to reduce the spread of coronavirus.

Mr Johnson, speaking at a simultaneous press conference in Downing Street, urged parents not to leave children in the care of grandparents or older relatives who are at higher risk of becoming seriously ill with coronavirus.

Following from the Prime Minister's briefing, parents have been wondering what is being classed as a key worker or vulnerable child.

Who is a key worker?

The UK government has previously suggested examples of key workers are NHS staff, police and supermarket delivery drivers.

Whilst they have not released a full list, schools have been asking parents if they work in any of the following categories:

  • National Health Service
  • Armed forces
  • Teachers and childcare staff
  • Care home workers
  • Social workers
  • Police officers, community support, civilian staff
  • Prison officer or other probation staff
  • Firefighters
  • Local authority planners
  • Environmental health officers
  • Highway Agency traffic officers

Who is a vulnerable child?

Vulnerable children include those who have a social worker and those with Education, Health and Care Plans – a legal document that describes a child’s special educational needs and the support they require.

Nurseries, private schools and sixth forms should also follow this guidance. The government will provide financial support for these settings as required.

Children who do not fall into these groups should remain at home with appropriate care.
