Coronavirus: Four more people with Covid-19 die in Wales

Four more coronavirus patients have died in Wales, bringing the total to 38.

A further 172 cases of Covid-19 have now been confirmed, Public Health Wales said on Saturday, to reach a total of 1093.

A total of 1,019 patients have died after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 5pm on Friday, the Department of Health said, up from 759 the day before.

There are currently more than 14,000 people who have tested positive for coronavirus across the UK. But the overall number of those with the virus is expected to be much higher as only a small proportion of people are currently being tested.

This weekend testing for frontline NHS staff will be trialled ahead of a wider roll-out to help those given the all-clear from the disease return to work.

Boots today opened facilities in Nottingham and the Chessington World of Adventures in Surrey to test doctors and nurses who have been self-isolating and are unsure whether they have the virus.

NHS bosses in England said the tests would initially be focused on those working in intensive care, A&E, GP practices and staff running ambulance services.

Dr Robin Howe, incident director at Public Health Wales, said: “172 new cases have tested positive for Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Wales, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 1093, although the true number of cases is likely to be higher.

“4 further deaths have been reported to us of people who had tested positive for Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), taking the number of deaths in Wales to 38.

“We offer our condolences to families and friends affected, and we ask those reporting on the situation to respect patient confidentiality.

“Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is now circulating in every part of Wales.  The single most important action we can all take in fighting Coronavirus is to stay at home in order to protect the NHS, and save lives.

“We know that staying at home can be hard, and we want to thank each and every person across Wales for doing their bit to help slow the spread of the virus.”

In Wales preparations are continuing to make sure health boards are equipped to deal with the peak of the pandemic.

The Principality Stadium will be turned into a 2,000-bed hospital to help deal with the patients, it has been confirmed, along with Parc y Scarlets in Llanelli.
