Coronavirus: Former Man Utd star Marouane Fellaini tests positive for killer bug

Former Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini has tested positive for coronavirus.

The Belgian has become the first player in the Chinese Super League to contract the deadly bug.

Ex-Everton star Fellaini is currently plying his trade for Shandong Luneng in the Far East and was confirmed as having tested positive by a local health department in Jinan after taking a train to the Chinese province on Friday.

The Chinese Super League is currently suspended indefinitely in line with the vast majority of major leagues in all sports around the world as a result of the continuing pandemic.

China has seen a dramatic decrease in cases over the last month despite COVID-19 originating in the country.

Europe is now believed to be the epicentre of the bug with Italy suffering the worst death toll on the continent so far.

Much of the UK is in complete lockdown after prime minister Boris Johnson ordered a nationwide closing of pubs, restaurants and cinemas.

Fellaini spent 11 years in the Premier League at Goodison and Old Trafford before leaving United for Shandong in a £10.4million deal last year.

After putting pen to paper on an eye-watering £250,000-a-week deal he scored 13 goals in his debut campaign in China.

The 31-year-old joins a list of footballers who have been confirmed as having tested positive for coronavirus including Juventus star Paulo Dybala - the third from the Bianconeri to do so after teammates Blaise Matuidi and Daniele Rugani.

Former Real Madrid president Lorenzo Sanz tragically lost his battle with the virus on Saturday.

West Brom striker Charlie Austin revealed he has been self-isolating after suffering symptoms of coronavirus following a trip to the Cheltenham Festival, but has not taken a test.
