Coronavirus: Nando's closes all 400 UK restaurants 'until further notice'

Nando's has said it will temporarily close all its restaurants in the UK "until further notice".

The chain has more than 400 restaurants in the country and said the decision was "the best course of action".

In a post on Twitter, the company said: "The health and safety of our customers and team is our highest priority.

"We have decided that the best course of action right now is to temporarily close our restaurants until further notice.

Other major food and retail outlets, including McDonald's, Primark, Pret A Manger, Starbucks and Harrods announced similar lockdowns over the weekend.

It comes after the Government ordered restaurants, cafes, pubs and other public places to close in a bid to stem the spread of the disease.

Fans of the South African restaurant chain, that specialises in Portuguese food, such as peri-peri style chicken dishes, have taken to social media to react to the news.

Some have raised concerns about the company's employees and whether they will be getting full pay during the closure period.

While there has been no official word from Nando's, some current and former staff members have said employees will be paid in full.

McDonald's bosses, meanwhile, decided to close its restaurants because of concerns about 'safe social distancing' during takeaway and drive-thru collections - with the seating areas having already been shut off last week.

Associated British Foods Plc, which owns retail giant Primark announced it would close all 189 UK stores from Sunday night after cancelling all new orders from suppliers as demand shrinks due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Official figures from the Department of Health and Social Care and Public Health England, released on Sunday morning, showed 78,340 people had been tested for coronavirus in the UK, with 5,683 patients confirmed positive.

Boris Johnson has said the Government is ready to impose tougher restrictions to curb the spread of the coronavirus if people do not follow the guidance on social distancing.

The Prime Minister's warning came as the latest official figures showed the number of people across the UK who have died after testing positive for Covid-19 has risen by 48 to 281.

This includes patients aged 18 and 102 – thought to be the youngest and oldest victims so far.

Nando's, owned by Dick Enthoven, was founded in Johannesbourg in 1987, operating 1,000 outlets in 35 countries.

It opened its first UK restaurant in 1992 in the west London suburbs of Ealing and Earls Court, and now employs over 8,000 staff in more than 280 branches.

Weekend crowds endangered lives as they filled parks, beaches, garden centres and supermarkets despite pleas to stay home to stop the spread of coronavirus.
