Coronavirus: First Minister confirms highest daily rise in Covid-19 cases for three months

NICOLA Sturgeon has confirmed there have been 71 new cases of coronavirus during the past 24 hours - including four cases in Lanarkshire.

The new figure comes after 77 cases were confirmed yesterday, the highest daily figure for almost three months, taking the total number of positive cases to 19,605.

The First Minister announced there have been no new hospital deaths from positive cases within the past 24 hours with the total number of deaths remaining at 2492.

The latest figures come just days after a fourth pupil at Coatbridge's St Ambrose High School tested positive for Covid-19.

The identification of this positive case was linked to, and formed part of, NHS Lanarkshire’s community-wide investigation.

This includes confirmation of four pupils from St Ambrose High, one pupil from Caldervale High School in Airdrie and one pupil at St Andrew’s High School in Coatbridge testing positive for coronavirus, along with three other linked cases who are not pupils or staff at the schools.

It was confirmed Scotland will remain in phase three of restrictions but announced gyms in Scotland will reopen ahead of schedule as of August 31, with strict hygiene measures in place.

Contact team sports can resume outdoors as of August 24, and bingo halls will be able to reopen from the same date.

Police will also have new powers to break up house parties exceeding the limit of eight people from three different households.
