Coronavirus fines explained as Scotland's stay at home lockdown continues

Scots have been living under new strict stay at home lockdown restrictions since they were enforced earlier this week.

Concerns have grown over a more-transmissible strain of Covid-19, which has been sweeping Scotland in recent weeks.

Nicola Sturgeon said that the new variant was accountable for around half of overnight cases reported on Tuesday.

The First Minister said that the Scottish Government had to act “quickly and decisively” when announcing strict lockdown measures across the mainland on Monday this week.

Scots must stay at home under the new rules implemented.

Non-essential businesses must close, household mixing inside a private home is completely banned and school buildings will remain closed to most pupils during the period of lockdown.

This has come into place in addition to rule of face coverings and social distancing that has been in force during much of the coronavirus pandemic.

How will the police enforce the new rules?

Police Scotland says it will step up patrols in communities to explain the regulations to members of the public, in light of the new rules.

The force reiterated its stance on the law and will only use enforcement as a “last resort”.

Officers will be encouraged to explain the rules, ask for compliance and will only enact the law where there is a “clear breach of the legislation.”

Chief Constable Iain Livingstone said earlier this week: “I fully recognise the impact these further restrictions will have on people’s lives.

“However, it is clear that the significant sacrifices being made by people across Scotland are vital to help suppress the spread of coronavirus.

“People should not leave their homes unless for essential purposes. The best way to stay safe is to stay at home.

He added: “Where officers encounter wilful breaches, they will act decisively to enforce the law.”

What are the fines for someone in breach of coronavirus law?

Any serious breaches may result in a court imposed fine (SNS Group)

Anyone over the age of 18 found to be in breach of the rules may be issued with a fine for £60 - which is reduced to £30 if paid within 28 days.

If a person has already received fine, then the amount will double on the next offence.

This will continue to double on each further repeat offence up to a maximum of £960.

It is also possible that a person could be prosecuted and subject to a court imposed fine as a result of the most serious breaches.

People who fly into Scotland from countries not on the Scottish Government’s quarantine exemption list, must self-isolate for 10 days on their arrival back into the country.

Anyone who is found not to comply with this rule may be fined £480 in Scotland under a fixed penalty notice.
