Coronavirus figures Scotland and how things have changed in the last seven days

A further 237 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the Lothians, taking the total number cases across the area in the last week to 1830.

The latest Scottish Government figures report that 1865 people have returned positive tests across the country in the last 24-hours. Test positivity is at 8.7 per cent.

A total of 1596 people are in Scotland's hospitals having contracted the virus, with 109 currently in intensive care units.

The Scottish Government also report that there have been 93 additional deaths in the last 24-hours.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said this week that the latest spike in the virus was putting strain on the NHS, with hospital numbers higher than they were in the April peak.

The country was plunged into lockdown on Boxing Day, and measures were tightened further at the start of this week, and it may take a couple of weeks before we start to see the results come through in the data.

But with alarmingly high numbers at the start of 2020, prompting Sturgeon to issue a warning to Scots on her Twitter account, have things improved in the last week?

One area where there appears to have been some progress is test positivity (the percentage of tests coming back positive).

On Sunday and Monday this number was as high as 15 per cent, dropping to 14.8 per cent on Tuesday and then 10.5 per cent on Wednesday. Saturday's figure of 8.7 per cent suggests things might be moving in the right direction on that front.

The WHO target is 5 per cent and this is used as a measure of whether a country has a pandemic under control or not.

In terms of positive Covid-19 tests, Saturday's number of 1865 is the lowest in a week.

However it would be wrong to suggest there's been a real downward trend. This figure was as high as 2309 on Friday and 2647 on Thursday.

These numbers represent increases on those seen last Saturday (2137).

In terms of hospital admissions the figures peaked at 1596 today, having been steadily rising all week. This will likely offer greatest cause for concern for the First Minister as she's already spoken about the strain the health service is under. Today's ICU figure of 109 is also the highest we've seen this week - up 16 from Tuesday.
