Coronavirus fears sees Donald Trump extend US travel ban to include UK and Ireland

US President Donald Trump is extending the nation's coronavirus-related travel ban imposed on 26 European countries to include the UK and Ireland.

Vice-President Mike Pence announced that the ban will begin at midnight EST on Monday (04:00 GMT Tuesday).

He said: "In our taskforce meeting today the president has made a decision to suspend all travel to the UK and Ireland, effective midnight Monday night, eastern standard time".

"Americans in the UK or Ireland can come home, legal residents can come home. They  will be funnelled through specific airports and processed".

The extension of the travel ban to include the UK and Ireland was decided after a "unanimous recommendation" from health experts according to the Vice-President.

Trump had imposed the original month-long restriction on travel from most of Europe to begin at midnight last night (March 13).

The news comes as the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Glasgow rose to 31, with another 10 people officially diagnosed since yesterday.

While in Scotland, there has been a major increase in the number of cases, with 121 now confirmed to have the COVID-19 strain of the disease, according to the Scottish Government - an increase from 85 yesterday.
