Coronavirus fears dismissed at Glasgow University as 'unwell' worker sent home after Italy trip

A staff member at Glasgow University has been sent home from the institution due to fears they may have contracted the coronavirus.

The female member of staff, who works within the School of Education, took unwell after returning recently from a trip to Rome.

An email sent by the university to staff noted that the decision to send the staff member home was taken as a precautionary measure, with her symptoms "not necessarily consistent" with the virus.

After seeking medical advice, NHS Scotland advised the member of staff to self-isolate at home as a result, away from the institution - which is home to over 25,000 students.

A University of Glasgow spokesperson said: "A colleague returned from Rome (not in the affected area of Italy) and was feeling unwell yesterday.

"The individual was not exhibiting symptoms consistent with Coronavirus, but as a precaution the colleague was told to go home and call NHS 24.

"They instructed the person to self isolate. That is entirely in keeping with public health advice.

"We were aware that some colleagues in the same department as this person were expressing concern, and to stem any further rumours we issued a communication which summarised the above".
