Coronavirus: FA advise grassroots football be postponed for "foreseeable future"

The FA have advised amateur football clubs across England to postpone activity for the foreseeable future.

It comes following the latest government announcement, amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

An FA statement declared: "Following the Government’s announcement today, for people to avoid social contact and gatherings where possible, we are now advising that all grassroots football in England is postponed for the foreseeable future.

"Throughout this period, we have taken Government advice with the priority being the health and wellbeing of all.

“We will continue to work closely with the grassroots game during this time.

"We are in regular communication with the Government and the situation within English football at all levels remains under regular review.

“Further updates will follow as needed."

It comes after the fifth tier of the English game, the National League, announced it had suspended matches until at least April 3.

The FA, Premier League, EFL and Barclays FA Women's Super League and FA Women's Championship had agreed to postpone professional matches on Friday but the National League decided to continue with their fixtures over the weekend.

Six matches took place in the National League and six games in the National League North, while their was a full complement of fixtures in the National League South on Saturday.

However, following another board meeting on the Monday, the National League has acknowledged that "it is not practical for its fixtures to be fulfilled in the immediate future" following Government advice to not support sporting events with emergency services workers.
