Coronavirus: Ex-Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni gives isolation tips and thanks fans for birthday wishes

Former Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni thanked fans for birthday wishes as he turned 81.

The legendary Italian football manager is currently in isolation in his native country as Italy attempts to battle the spread of coronavirus.

Trapattoni - who managed the Boys in Green from 2008 to 2013 - encouraged the elderly to embrace technology in the weeks and months ahead.

Ireland's Euro 2012 boss 'Trap' appropriately took to Twitter to share his isolation tips, including video calls and using devices to battle loneliness.

He tweeted: "I thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for the good wishes!

"Living in isolation is not easy, but we have a duty to help those who are working hard to contain the emergency, limiting those behaviors that could make the situation worse.

"In this context, we elders should make an extra effort because we are the most vulnerable.

"My advice? Stay Home, Stay Safe. Don't be stubborn and ask for help. Use phones and other technology devices to combat loneliness.

"Today I will celebrate at home, together with my wife Paola. We will be in touch with my family with video calls.

"It's going to be an unusual birthday, but we're going to have a way to celebrate together when this is all over.  #andràtuttobene  A warm hug to everyone! The Trap"

The FAI's official social accounts wished fans a happy St Patrick's Day and also sent birthday wishes to Trapattoni and ex-Ireland international Paddy Mulligan.

Irish football icon Paul McGrath tweeted: "Happy St Patricks day to all my family and friends and everyone in all corners of the world.

"Please be safe at this trying time, look out for yourselves & look out for others too we will get through this together."

Ex-Ireland keeper Shay Given expressed his confidence that the nation will eventually bounce back from the Covid-19 pandemic with his Instagram message, saying: "Happy St. Patrick’s day to every1 around the world.

"Yes has definitely got a different feel to it this year so please stay safe and look after those most in need and we will all come back stronger together️ #stpatricksday"
