Coronavirus: Everything you need to know about the killer virus and how to protect yourself from it

As coronavirus outbreaks are on the rise across Europe, the HSE has issued guidelines on how to protect yourself against the killer disease.

There are currently over 280 people infected and seven dead due to the deadly virus in Italy.

While there are no confirmed cases in Ireland, the government has warned that it could only be a matter of days until COVID-19 arrives in the country.

Health Minister Simon Harris said on Monday the chances of an Irish outbreak have “significantly increased”.

He added: “There could well be a case in Ireland in the coming days and weeks.”

How to protect yourself against coronavirus

Here’s all you need to know about COVID-19:

What’s COVID-19 or coronavirus and what are the symptoms?

Coronavirus is a respiratory illness which includes symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, breathing difficulties, and fever.

The virus can cause more severe illnesses like pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, and kidney failure.

It takes 14 days for the symptoms to appear.

You are likely more at risk of complications if you are 65 years of age or over or have a long-term medical condition – for example, heart disease, lung disease, diabetes or liver disease.

How is coronavirus spread?

The virus is spread through sneezing or cough droplets.

You can catch the coronavirus if you’ve been to one of the affected areas, been in contact with a person who has the virus, or been to a healthcare facility where patients with coronavirus were treated.

The HSE says you can’t get coronavirus from packages or food that has come from China or elsewhere.

There is no evidence that animals or animal products legally imported into the EU are a health risk due to coronavirus.

When do I need to get tested for the virus?

It’s advised to get tested if you’re showing symptoms and have been in an affected area or in contact with a person with coronavirus in the last 14 days.

What do I do if I’m showing symptoms?

The most important thing is to self-isolate and call your GP and tell them about your travel history and symptoms.

Make sure to ring your GP first rather than go there in person to avoid putting the staff and patients at risk of infection.

There is no specific symptom for coronavirus but many of the symptoms of the virus can be treated.

The flu vaccine doesn’t protect against coronavirus.

How do I protect myself against coronavirus?

It is important to wash your hands regularly with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub.

Wash your hands after coughing or sneezing, using the toilet, before eating, if you come in contact with a sick person, if your hands are dirty, and if you have handled animals or animal waste.

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or sleeve when coughing and sneezing, and remember to put used tissues in the bin.

Don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth if your hands are not clean.

The HSE says you should only use a facemask if you have coronavirus or if you’re in contact with someone who does.
