Coronavirus: England head coach Eddie Jones agrees to 25 per cent pay cut

Eddie Jones has agreed to a request from his employers to take a pay cut “in excess” of 25 per cent.

The Red Rose boss reputedly receives £750,000 year but with rugby in shutdown, Rugby Football Union bosses have joined Premiership stars in taking 25 per cent salary reductions.

RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney said: “Eddie is overseas at present and when I contacted him regarding our Executive pay reduction proposals he immediately agreed.”

As Twickenham further revealed that it is in consultation with Jones’ wider coaching team about a temporary three-month pay cut, Saracens’ England star George Kruis said he had taken his on the chin - describing it as “pretty fair”.

The lockdown means Kruis, who is expected to move to Japan to play his club rugby next season, is sweating on whether he has played his last games for club and country.

“It would have been nice to finish off the Six Nations and progress in Europe if possible, so there is a frustration there,” said the lock.

“But, ultimately, we have been playing rugby for 12 years now and this is a proper curve ball so we have just got to take it seriously and adapt.

“There is a lot of stuff going on with the economy and the clubs are all very much up against it as they have got no crowds.

“I think it (pay cut) is pretty fair. It is a tough period for entertainment and measures have been put in place across different businesses.

"We have just got to take it on the chin.”

Newcastle, the unbeaten Championship leaders, are set to go even further - having proposed to their players and staff that they take a period of unpaid leave.

Kruis, who keeps in shape by training each day alone in a field with his dog, is fortunate to have a thriving cannabis oil business to occupy his mind.

He announced yesterday that he had teamed up with Boots to sell his fourfiveCBD range online.
