Coronavirus: Edinburgh Uni issues message of support for people of Wuhan

Edinburgh University have shared a 'big message of love' with the Chinese city at the heart of the ongoing global coronavirus outbreak.

The clip sees a number of students and staff at the university offer their thoughts and sympathies to people living in Wuhan, the city known as ground zero for the deadly virus.

It comes as the SARS-like coronavirus has spread to almost every continent with the total number of people diagnosed in the UK currently standing at 15.

In the message, Edinburgh University's Dean of Biomedical Sciences Mike Shipston addresses the people of Wuhan directly, saying: "We realize the challenges you have been facing over the last couple of weeks.

"But we just want to send a big message of love and support and I have been thinking of you at these times."

Elsewhere another faculty member, Juliette MacDonald says: "I have been following the news of the coronavirus with much sadness. I could only imagine how difficult these tough weeks must have been for you."

Wuhan - a city of around 11 million people - has been in total lock down since the first cases of the deadly virus appeared there late last year.

Edinburgh students have also added their voices in solidarity with the virus stricken city.

In the recording one can be heard saying: "The world is looking at you and hoping you yourself are going be ok.

While another adds: "I would like to encourage you all to stay strong, stay positive and take care of your health and well-being."

The video ends with an emotional final message from all the students and staff - "Stay strong, Wuhan UoE is with you"
