Coronavirus: Edinburgh Playhouse closes with 'immediate effect' as UK told to stay at home

The Edinburgh Playhouse is the latest venue to close its doors amid the coronavirus outbreak in a bid to prevent further spread of infection.

In an announcement made shortly before 5pm on Monday evening, the Playhouse said that all shows were suspended with "immediate effect".

Theatre-goers who were already on route to see shows when the announcement was made were also to be turned away.

The decision comes after Boris Johnson urged all British citizens to end all "non-essential" contact and stop going to pubs, restaurants and clubs.

In a statement on Monday, the Prime Minister set out the need for "drastic action" to tackle the "fast growth" of the virus.

Mark Cornell, Group CEO of Ambassador Theatre Group, said: "In response to the Prime Minister’s statement this evening, advising the UK public to avoid unnecessary social contact, including in theatres, we regret to inform you that shows in all Ambassador Theatre Group UK venues are suspended with immediate effect.

"We understand that this decision comes as a disappointment, and a massive inconvenience for those of you already on the way to a venue this evening, but ultimately we all want the same thing: the health and safety of our communities, and we believe this is the correct decision to make.

"Given the current ambiguity and lack of clarity as to how long our theatres may be closed for, we hope to provide you with an update within the next 48 hours regarding the exchange of tickets. We will be consulting with industry bodies including the Society of London Theatre and UK Theatre and the government over the immediate future.

"For now, we would like to thank you for your understanding and patience, and to recognise the incredible efforts and support of our producers, partners and customers over this difficult period."

The Scottish Government announced yesterday that there had been one new confirmed case of coronavirus in the Lothians since Sunday, up from 28, with 171 throughout Scotland.

Edinburgh Live will be bringing you all the latest updates concerning the virus in Edinburgh and the Lothians on our live blog.
