Coronavirus: Edinburgh gym need old electronic tablets to give to elderly for virtual classes

A not-for-profit gym in Leith is appealing for people to donate or loan out old electronic tablets that will be used to continue teaching fitness classes to elderly people during self-isolation.

Projekt 42, which offers pay as you go classes for under £2, have been forced to suspend their club's senior fitness club amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The gym, on Leith Walk, are appealing for people to donate or loan any tablets that they no longer use, which will be used to teach elderly people weekly workouts at home.

In a post to social media, Projekt 42 said: "We need your help. As you know we had to postpone our senior fitness club. This club is really important to P42 staff and our community. Each week over 100 seniors workout with us, taking part in strength training, yoga, circuits, dance and tai chi. We're sad we need to cancel this activity.

"As an alternative, we are asking our members and Leithers to donate or loan P42 any tablets that are no longer of use to you. We probably all have one at home that we don't use.

"We will:

1. Share the tablets with our senior fitness club
2. Record and download weekly workouts for our senior fitness club to complete at home
3. Download and teach our senior fitness club how to use zoom and Skype so we can call each participant to check that they're ok and we can promote the senior fitness club chatting to each other via Skype

"We'll be looking to connect seniors with their neighbours who may already have wifi and will be looking at data packages too. It is really important that we keep everyone from feeling lonely or isolated. Please help if you can."

Iceland stores up and down the country are changing their opening hours for elderly shoppers amid the coronavirus outbreak - including here in Edinburgh.

The budget chain is encouraging store managers nationwide to dedicate the first two hours of a store opening on Wednesday morning to pensioners and vulnerable people in the community.
